What is Christmas?
Christmas is a holiday on December 25. Christmas is a Christian holiday to commemorate the birth of Jesus, but non-Christians celebrate it too. There are many different Christmas traditions. At holiday celebrations people eat good food and talk with their family and friends.
Christmas Eve
The night before Christmas (December 24) is Christmas Eve. Many families go to church on Christmas Eve. Some churches have nativity scenes. Choirs sing beautiful Christmas carols.
Gifts
It is traditional to exchange gifts at Christmas time. People put presents under the Christmas tree. They open the gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in the morning. Children hang stockings on the fireplace. Santa Claus fills the stockings with candy and gifts.
Decorations
Many people decorate their homes for Christmas. They hang lights outside their homes. They put a wreath on their door. The traditional Christmas flower is the poinsettia. The most important decoration is the Christmas tree. People hang ornaments and string lights on the tree. Some people put a star on the top of the Christmas tree.
