Christmas

What is Christmas?
Christmas is celebrated around the world on December 25. While Christmas is a Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus, it is celebrated by many non-Christians as well. There are many different Christmas traditions, some religious and some secular, but what all holiday celebrations have in common is that everyone likes to get together with loved ones to enjoy good food and good company.

Christmas Eve
The night before Christmas (December 24) is called Christmas Eve. Many families attend Christmas Eve church services together. Some churches even have live nativity scenes with people dressed as Mary and Joseph and real animals. Choirs sing beautiful Christmas carols such as the traditional song “Silent Night.”

Gifts
It is traditional to exchange gifts at Christmas time. People put presents under the Christmas tree to open on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in the morning. Children hang stockings on the fireplace for Santa Claus to fill with candy and gifts.

Decorations
Many people decorate their homes for Christmas. They hang lights outside their homes and put a wreath on their door. The traditional Christmas flower is the poinsettia, a beautiful red flower that blooms in winter. The most important decoration is the Christmas tree. People hang ornaments and string lights on the tree. Some people put a star on the top of the Christmas tree to represent the Star of Bethlehem.
