Comparatives

Comparatives are words used to compare two people or two things.

     Chicago is smaller than New York.
     Chicago es más pequeño que Nueva York.

 

We usually form the comparative by adding -er to the end of the adjective.

     small - smaller

 

If an adjective already ends in an "e" we just add an "r" to form the comparative.

     large - larger

 

If a word ends in a consonant and then a "y", we change the "y" to an "i" and then add -er.

     easy - easier

 

If a word ends in a consonant, vowel, and then consonant and the stress is on the last syllable, we double the last consonant before adding -er.

     big - bigger

 

If a word is two syllables or longer and doesn't end in a "y", add the word "more".

     expensive - more expensive
