Infinitive or Gerund?

Some verbs are always used with verbs in the infinitive form (to + verb).

I need to study.

Other verbs are always used with verbs in the gerund form (verb + -ing).

He started working.

Other verbs can be used with either form.

I like swimming.
I like to swim.

 

Verbs used with the infinitive

arrange (to + verb) = arreglar
demand (to + verb) = demandar, exigir
expect (to + verb) = esperar (lo que piensas que va a pasar)
hope (to + verb) = esperar (como esperanza)
manage (to + verb) = lograr (hacer algo)
need (to + verb) = necesitar
offer (to + verb) = ofrecer
plan (to + verb) = planear
promise (to + verb) = prometer
refuse (to + verb) = reusar
threaten (to + verb) = amenazar
want (to + verb) = querer
would like (to + verb) = le gustaría

Practice
Write sentences with the following information.  Remember that all of these verbs are used with the infinitive.

Verbs used with the gerund

begin (verb + -ing) = empezar
finish (verb + -ing) = terminar
give up (verb + -ing) = dejar (de hacer algo)
miss (verb + -ing) = extrañar
practice (verb + -ing) = practicar
start (verb + -ing) = empezar
stop (verb + -ing) = parar (de hacer algo)
