both/either/neither

 

The word "both" in English indicates two out of a group of two ("ambos" in Spanish).    "Either" indicates one out of a group of two ("uno de los dos").  "Neither" indicates zero out of a group of two ("ninguno").  These words can be used in the following ways. 

 

Both can be used with a plural noun.  Either and Neither are used with singular nouns. 
 

Both students can take the test. (Ambos estudiantes pueden tomar el examen.)
Either student can take the test.
(Uno de los estudiantes puede tomar el examen.)
Neither student can take the test.
(Ninguno de los estudiantes puede tomar el examen.)

 

"Both" can be used with two nouns connected with "and."  "Either" can be used with two nouns connected with "or."  "Neither" can be used with two nouns connected with "nor." 
 

Both Frank and Bob live in Chicago.
Either Frank or Bob lives in Chicago.
Neither Frank nor Bob live in Chicago.

 

You can use these words with the preposition "of" before plural nouns or object pronouns. 
 

Both of them can go to the party.
Either of them can go the to party.
Neither of them can go to the party.

 

The word "both" has some more uses.  We can use the word "both" after a subject or object pronoun or before a plural noun. 
 

We both loved the movie.
He gave us
both a birthday present.
Both students passed the test.

 

Instructions
Select the correct word to complete the sentence.

1.  I like pizza and you like pizza.  We like pizza. 
2.  You don't like coffee and I don't like coffee.  of us likes coffee.
     
3.  Bob lives in Chicago or Fran lives in Chicago.   Bob or Fran lives in Chicago.  I don't remember which one.  
4.  My son and my daughter like ice cream.  children like ice cream.
     
5.  My father and my mother are not retired.  of my parents are retired.
     
6.  Neither Gerry Dana like to watch TV. 
7.  I want either the red one the blue one. 
8.  I need both that book this one. 

 

Instructions
Find the mistake (error) in the following sentences.  Write the sentence correctly.

He are a student. 

1. Either students can use the book.  
    

2. Both house are blue.  
    

3. Neither Bob or Fred can speak French.  
    

4. Both of they speak Spanish.  
    

5. She gived both children a present.  
    

ANTES DE REVISAR
Si escribió dos espacios entre las palabras en lugar de uno, la computadora va a interpretar que es un error al revisar.  También asegure que escribió correctamente las letras en mayúsculas o minúsculas como corresponde y que escribió el punto al final.
