I before E except after C

There is a famous phrase that children often learn in American schools to help them with spelling.  

"I before E except after C"

This means that in words that have the combination of the letter "i" with the letter "e" usually the "i" is going to come before the "e" except if the letters follow a letter "c."  After a "c" usually "e" comes before "i."

ie ei (after c)
believe (creer) ceiling (techo)
friend (amigo) deceive (engañar)
belief (creencia)           receive (recibir)
piece (pedazo) perceive (percibir)
chief (jefe) deceit (decepción)

 


 

Unfortunately there are many exceptions to this rule.  In words where the "ei" combination sounds like a long "a" sound (like the letter "e" in Spanish) "e" comes before "i" even if there is no "c."  

eight (ocho)
weigh (pesar)
freight (cargo)

There are other words that don't follow any of the above rules.  

weird (raro)
neither (ninguno)
foreign (extranjero)

Practice
Select "Correct" if the word is spelled correctly and "Incorrect" if the word is spelled incorrectly.
