The Consonant-Vowel-Consonant Rule

If a verb ends in a consonant then a vowel and then another consonant and the stress is on the last syllable of the word, the last letter is doubled before adding an ending (-ing or -ed).

begin - beginning
La palabra "begin" termina con consonante, vocal, consonante y la última sílaba es la fuerte (begin).

stop - stopping - stopped
La palabra "stop" termina con consonante, vocal, consonante, y es de una sola sílaba (asi que la última sílaba es la fuerte).

open - opening - opened
La palabra "open" termina con consonante, vocal, consonante pero la última sílaba no es la fuerte (open).  Por eso no se escribe con doble n.

 

The exception to this rule is the letter "w".

blow - blowing
Aunque la palabra "blow" (soplar) termina con consonante, vocal, consonante, no se pone doble de la última letra porque termina con w.

 

* In England (but not the U.S.) the final "l" in the verbs "cancel" and "travel" is doubled although the stress is not on the last syllable.
