Past Progressive

The past progressive tense indicates that something was happening in the past.  It is formed by using "was" or "were" and the gerund (the -ing form of the verb).

I was studying. = Yo estaba estudiando.

Past Progressive
I       was studying.
He    wasn't studying.
She
It		 Was he studying?
     Yes, he was.
     No, he wasn't.
You    were studying.
They  weren't studying.  
We		 Were they studying?   
     Yes, they were.
     No, they weren't.

Negativo en letras rojas.

Practice
Read Herb's schedule for yesterday and make sentences about what he was doing at the different times.

Herb's Schedule

  8:00 AM    Meet with Mr. Jones
10:00 AM    Work on the computer
12:00 PM    Eat lunch
  1:00 PM    Meet with the accounting department
  3:00 PM    Make phone calls
  6:00 PM    Close the office

Past Progressive vs. Past Tense

We often use the past progressive with the past tense in a sentence to indicate that something was happening when suddenly something else happened.

I was walking to school when it started raining.
Estaba caminando a la escuela cuando empezó a llover.

Make sentences about the following events.

5.  3:00 PM - 4:00 PM   We/work in the yard
     3:55 PM   we heard a car accident
