False Cognates

 

Cognates are words that are very similar in English and Spanish.  False cognates are words that look similar in both languages but do NOT have the same meaning.

 

The following words look like they mean the same thing in both languages, but they don't.
 

embarrassed (English)
embarazada (Spanish)

embarrassed = avergonzado
embarazada = pregnant

False Cognates
Spanish translation = red letters
English translation = blue letters

actually = realmente
actualmente
= currently    

assist = ayudar
asistir
= attend

attend = asistir
atender
= take care of

carpet = alfombra
carpeta
= binder

compromise = término medio   
compromiso
= commitment

embarrassed = avergonzado
embarazada
= pregnant

exit = salida
éxito
= success

fabric = tela
fábrica
= factory

large = grande
largo
= long

lecture = discurso
lectura
= reading

library = biblioteca
librería
= bookstore

record = grabar
recordar
= remember
